Honouring a Legacy: Remembrance Day and the Naming of Miseferi Crescent

This Remembrance Day, we proudly honour the remarkable legacy of Frank Miseferi by naming a street after him at our Modal at Main Community in Cambridge. This tribute not only commemorates Frank's courageous service but also celebrates the invaluable contributions of his wife, Rose Miseferi, and the countless men and women who supported the war effort during World War II.

Frank Miseferi: A Hero's Journey

Recruited into the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Gunner on August 17, 1942, Frank Miseferi served bravely in various locations across Europe, including London, England, and several cities in Germany and France. After completing his tours, Frank took an instructor’s course and taught new gunnery recruits for six months before being sent home to Canada, where he was honourably discharged.  Frank was able to tell his story through articles in the Airforce Magazine, Wartime Scrapbook, Cambridge Times and Waterloo Record, as well as his wartime memoirs titled “I Never Forget”. Frank’s commitment to fighting for freedom, democracy, and peace reflects the values we hold dear as a community. Frank's legacy is one of courage and dedication, and we are honoured to ensure that his name continues to resonate in our community.

Rose Miseferi: The Unsung Heroine

Born in 1927 in Galt, Ontario, Rose Miseferi exemplifies the spirit of resilience and determination. At just 12 years old, she left school to work in a toy factory, earning a mere 9 cents an hour. When the war broke out in 1939, the factory transitioned to manufacturing army tank mirrors, and Rose, along with her co-workers, adapted to the demands of the time, working under harsh conditions without heat.

Despite the challenges, Rose and her colleagues forged ahead, even writing their names and addresses on cards to be placed inside the casings of the mirrors they assembled—a poignant reminder of the people behind the production. It was during one of these riveting sessions that Rose earned the nickname "Rosie the Riveter" after accidentally riveting her finger, a title she proudly carries to this day. Tragically, shortly after, an explosion levelled the factory, but Rose's spirit and dedication to her country remained unbroken.

A Lasting Tribute

In honour of Frank's service and Rose's incredible contributions, we are proud to have named a street in our new community after him. On October 27th, Rose was invited to be the first person to drive down Miseferi Crescent, a moment that encapsulated the spirit of remembrance and community. This gesture not only commemorates Frank's sacrifice but also celebrates the vital roles played by women like Rose during those challenging times.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by so many, let us remember Frank and Rose Miseferi, whose stories remind us of the enduring spirit of service and community. This Remembrance Day, we invite everyone to honour their legacy and the countless others who fought for the freedoms we cherish today.
