On October 20, 2016 team members from the Reid’s Heritage Group of Companies had the opportunity to volunteer at the Guelph Food Bank.
The organization’s goal is to help meet the needs of their clients in the short term and also help clients become self-sufficient and gain and maintain self-worth/esteem to eventually stand on their own with little or no help from agencies and groups within this community. Food Bank clients vary in age, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, but they have one thing in common: they are all faced with financial hardship. Due to illness, short-term crisis, job loss, adverse economic conditions, and the ever increasing cost of living, their clients cannot afford to buy the needed groceries to adequately feed themselves and/or their families. Through the Guelph Food Bank’s hamper and excess programs alone they assisted over 26,800 individuals last year. Over 30 Local Agencies, Neighbouring Food Banks and Pantries were supported through various Guelph Food Bank Programs. An impressive 1,195,297 pounds of food was distributed last year!
Twelve employees from our company attended this volunteer day. The afternoon’s primary task was to assemble toiletry sets in advance of the upcoming holiday season. Items like shampoo and conditioner, body wash, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste will go out to individuals and families in need as a special treat along with their holiday hampers to provide some additional assistance and support during this time. With many helping hands working together, over 300 packages were created by the end of the day!
Reid’s Heritage Group will also lend a hand volunteering at the Cambridge Food Bank and Owen Sound Good Food Box Program in the near future.
