Guelph, Ont.-based Reid’s Heritage homes has been honoured by the federal Ministry of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and arm of the Federal Government, with the inaugural Energy Star Builder of theYear Award. This is the first-ever national level award of its kind presented to any homebuilder across Canada.

Reid’s Heritage Homes joins a prestigious roster of past Energy Star Award recipients, which include renowned names such as Sears Canada, Hydro Quebec and Ontario Power Authority as well as this years fellow winners, Whirlpool Canada, Jeld-Wen Windows and Home Depot Canada.

The Awards in various categories were presented by the Director-General for the Office of Energy Efficiency, Natural Resources Canada, at a gala ceremony held on June 5 at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. The Awards recognize leadership in a wide range of energy efficient products, technologies and services and outstanding efforts in promoting Energy Star qualified products to benefit Canadian consumers and businesses.

“We are incredibly honoured to receive this prestigious award,” says Tim Blevins, president of Reid’s Heritage Homes. “As a third-generation home builder, we are constantly pushing the envelope with innovative designs and achieving efficiencies and savings for our homebuyers.”

Reid’s Heritage Homes is one of the first home builders in Ontario to recognize, prioritize and embrace the principles and practices of sustainability and energy efficiency for homes. One of the earliest adopters of Energy Star construction as a standard practice in their diverse new home communities, Reid’s Heritage Homes has several firsts in Green building to its credit.

Derek Satnik, managing director of Kitchener-based Mindscape Innovations and a long-time Reid’s Heritage Homes business associate says, “Reid’s Heritage Homes is the best kind of leader. They’re constantly trying new things, but better, they’re innovating in very careful ways: watching their budgets, catering their innovation to consumer needs, and making a real difference.”

Reid’s Heritage Homes built Canada’s first LEED home (also the first LEED Platinum), the first Built Green home in Ontario (also Built Green Platinum), certified by the Canada Green Building Council and Built Green Canada respectively. Reid’s Heritage Homes is also offering the City of Guelph’s Blue Built Home program in its signature Westminster Woods community in Guelph. In 2007, Reid’s Heritage Homes was honoured by the Ontario Home Builders Association with its first Green Builder of the Year Award, and has won many accolades since.

Reid’s Heritage Homes’ core principles of Green building are encompassed in its comprehensive EnviroWISE Program for homes. The EnviroWISE Program covers a wide cross-section of the most essential parameters of Green living, including health, comfort, resource, materials, technology, energy and savings. Besides raising the bar for sustainable home design and construction among its own staff, Reid’s Heritage Homes has also organized and challenged a consortium of suppliers to work together and develop new technologies to make homes greener and more efficient.
