Community Home Build Program at Eby Estates

Kitchener, Eby Estates, Current Events

On Thursday, January 26th 2012, Waterloo Catholic District School Board Teachers Dana Jones and Michael Berger, London Regional Manager Brian Haskett, and Health and Safety Coordinator Brian Reid will say “good-bye” to yet another group of students who dedicated their semester to learning the basics of homebuilding, on-site.  This semester’s home build project found the students of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School working Monday to Friday on Eby Estates’ second Community Home Build project.  The house, which is now completely framed, is located directly across from the Discovery Centre in Eby Estates.  A completed student built home (constructed just one semester earlier) can be viewed at 501 Isaiah Crescent.

The program has grown in student popularity and has been continuously successful since 2003.  However, the most rewarding outcome for the program supervisors is seeing the students realize and understand the importance of hard work and training.  According to Brian Reid, several students who have completed a Community Home Build semester in the past have chosen to go into a trade following graduation.  By great coincidence, some of these students have even secured jobs with companies who have worked with Reid’s Heritage Homes on previous projects.

The program supervisors will be recognizing the students’ efforts alongside their families and teachers at a special on-site presentation and lunch.

Congratulations to the Community Home Build Students, Dana Jones, Michael Berger, Brian Haskett and Brian Reid!
